I attended my first Ugly Christmas Sweater party in 2005 after a friend brought the tradition back from Australia.
In her article in The Atlantic, ‘The Ugly Christmas Sweater: No Longer Ironic’, Megan Garber writes, “The ubiquity of the UCS has been several years in the making. According to Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On, ‘there was a noticeable uptick in ugly sweater parties around 2001, and the tradition snowballed from there.’”
Cut to today where the NHL has rolled out official Ugly Christmas Sweaters for all teams (shop.nhl.com/Ugly_Sweaters) (the NBA has them too), and then the San Jose Sharks go ahead and holiday giftwrap an awesome Ugly Christmas Sweater rap called ‘Holiday Sweater’ for fans.
So there you go. Tipple a little bourbon into your eggnog, stir your coffee with a chocolate stick, and get your tree up – it’s that time of year.
